Flex is a Flash-based development language which harnesses all the power of Flash, and couples it with a programming interface that allows for rapid application development that isn't dependent on a timeline.

With Flex you get the usability of a desktop program and the freedom and interconnectivity of a web based application.  Users are given a more vivid and appealing graphic display interface with all the functionality of traditional Web development, and you never have to wait for page loads.

Enhancing the interaction between users and their applications, Flex replaces the current click-then-wait interface of standard Web sites.  As a RIA application, Flex permits users to work with their online-based application from a local copy on their computer.  By cutting out the middleman (an open browser window), your site's back end is that much more secure.

Adobe AIR
AIR (Adobe Integrated Runtime) allows for a further extension of Flex by allowing a Flex application to run on your desktop, independent of a browser.  If you have an application that you're constantly using, free yourself of the unnecessary overhead of keeping a browser open all the time by converting it into its own stand-alone AIR Application.
